The Challenge
The client needed to replace an aging underground slug catcher approaching the end of its reliable service life. The goal was to create and install a new above-ground unit while generating minimal operational downtime during the transition.

Our Process
The project prioritized safety, cost control and schedule adherence at every stage.
01
Step 1: Update Existing Documentation
JEPCO updated existing P&IDs, identified new tie-in points and performed relief valve sizing calculations to establish the engineering basis for the switchover.
02
Step 2: Build the 3D Cut-Over Plan
A 3D scan of the existing facility allowed JEPCO to plan a seamless switchover from the underground system to the new above-ground unit without guessing at existing conditions in the field.
03
Step 3: Complete Full-Scope Design
Engineering spanned process and mechanical design, civil/structural and foundation engineering, and electrical and instrumentation design—coordinated across disciplines rather than handed off in sequence.
04
Step 4: Manage Vendor Engagement
Once engineering data sheets and drawings were complete, JEPCO solicited bids, prepared bid tabulations and coordinated with the client’s procurement team through to award.
05
Step 5: Support Construction & Startup
JEPCO provided ongoing home office support throughout construction and startup, supplemented by site visits across all disciplines.

Engineering Services
This replacement required process, mechanical, civil/structural, and electrical & instrumentation design working in parallel—the kind of multi-discipline coordination JEPCO applies across midstream and refining projects alike.

The cut-over plan for this project depended on an accurate 3D scan of existing conditions—the same technology JEPCO uses to plan brownfield tie-ins without costly field surprises.
