General Description
Transforms initial rough product designs using computer aided design (CAD) into working documents. The documents produced are the company’s end product so accuracy and productivity are essential. This position is in the Civil/Structural Engineering group and reports directly to the Civil/Structural Manager. Requires minimal instruction from supervisor, uses pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job. Wide range of creativity expected. Plans, assigns, reviews and checks work of other designers and drafters.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Prepares variety of very difficult design assignments including drawings, sketches and layouts for civil, structural, concrete and/or architectural portion of a project. Applying accepted drafting methods, techniques and procedures
- Establishes design objectives for specific projects and recommends practicability and suitability of design, material and other criteria
- Evaluates effects of changes and modifications on form, function and positional relationships of total design component
- Frequently functions as working leader or lead designer providing guidance and direction to a group of drafters and designers
- Analyzes data and reviews drawings and plans to ensure quality of work and project constructability
- Performs design duties within a client’s operating facility or in the field in support of construction project
- Duties may include extended, but temporary out of town assignments
Minimum Qualifications
- Associates degree or technical school training in Computer Aided Design and Computer Drafting
- 8-10 years of work experience in Computer Drafting, or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Requires a high level of technical ability in civil structural design
- Requires a thorough working knowledge of basic AutoCAD applications and understanding of the capabilities/limitations of the equipment relating to the efficient production of engineering documents
- Working knowledge of current design codes and standards OSHA, MSHA, IBC, AISC, ACI, AWS
- 3D design experience with 3D CADWorx Steel design software
- Thorough understanding of construction drawings
- Good oral and written communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
- College courses in Engineering Math, Physics and Technical Writing
- Consulting engineering work experience (Civil/Structural)
- Working knowledge of MicroStation
- Heavy industrial experience
